Photographing Architecture

It’s always a great feeling to visit the completed stage of a new project, especially when the newly built structure is bathed in afternoon sunlight. For architects, interior designers, and custom builders, this moment of standing in an ideal location with ideal light gives meaning to all of the many hours spent in meetings at the site, waiting for blueprints to be processed, and cleaning up construction dust; but the difficulty of transferring the sense of space to a digital camera is usually where all of the prior work falls apart. The use of standard wide-angle lenses easily alters perspective enough that a square-shaped room appears to be irregularly warped or completely unnatural. Therefore, at Stuart Locklear Photography, we do things a bit differently; we will not be rushing through the property and taking multiple shots with bright flash; but rather, we will spend a lot of time capturing how a structure feels to its occupants when they are standing inside it.

Not only do high-quality images have many advantages as an archival filing system for your office, but high-quality images also act as one of your main marketing tools when seeking to illustrate to potential future clients how you work with light, how you proportion structures, and how you address complex layout difficulties. Also, whether you are attempting to capture the attention of potential high-end real estate or future clients who may be interested in a competitive commercial development opportunity or your design portfolio, images of the highest quality represent a substantial portion of the branding of your business before any inquiries are made.

Professional Architectural Photography Services

Commercial and residential buildings use entirely different architectural and interior design styles and should therefore not be shot using a generic or basic approach. Our photographer’s artistic vision remains fixed on the scale, longevity, the flow of the design of the area and how the area interacts with employees and/or customers while in use, documenting the flow of a modern plan as it relates to an upscale corporate business/office, medical office, and/or retail area.
The production of images of each residential project will emphasize quiet features, material textures, close-up views of interior spaces, and immediate warmth in the viewer/emotion of the space. Each new commercial and residential building, to us, is like an individual puzzle that we will use different technical techniques that match the architect’s interpretation of the physical characteristics of the individual building. It is our goal to not use the “vanilla” style of images typically used in basic listings, but to use the specific characteristics of the design to showcase the fine craftsmanship of the exterior.

A Look Inside Real Personal Brands

Visuals that do more than just look good—they communicate authority, personality, and presence.

Interior and Exterior Photography

When an architectural story is told through photos, and only the front door is represented in the architecture, it cannot truly tell the whole architectural story. By taking both inside and outside shots of the building exposes the viewer to the communication and connection that exists between the design of a building and the land around it, creating a complete visual story for the building.

When photographing an architectural structure, we do not turn up at the assigned time and pray for good weather; prior to the actual shoot we create a plan concerning the direction each building faces. For example, an all-glass building facing west will require a different calculation than an all masonry building facing east during daylight hours to determine the best time to photograph the outside of the building. It is certainly our objective to obtain a photograph of the outside of the building that represents the sun in a manner that makes the building look as amazing as possible and firmly attaches itself to the building’s surrounding environment.

Once we bring out our equipment into the building for the photoshoot, it then becomes a challenge to manage the mixing of light throughout each area. Between lighting from above and natural light flooding into the room from large windows, we spend time doing our best to balance both lights against one another when framing each room. Also, by framing each room with emphasis placed on its overall volume and the logical connections of its structure, we allow viewers to understand how it feels to move naturally through a house from the entry into the primary areas of that house.

Who Can Benefit from Architectural Photography?

Incorporating high-quality, professional real estate photography and architectural imaging is an important part of any company’s visual reputation, and many businesses utilize our construction images and images of other buildings regularly to enhance their portfolios. Architects and interior designers work with us often to create outstanding portfolios that assist them in obtaining additional work or acquiring promotional coverage in design magazines. And, construction companies use our photographs to document their progress on construction or completed projects for future developers to understand their construction capabilities.
